Artist Statement: I see my world monochromatically. The way light falls on a scene or subject is magical to me, exposing tones and textures that set up the mood and feel of the photograph. When I see all elements of the image come together as vividly as I imagined, I can feel it with my soul. My heart quickens at what my eyes & mind see. I press the shutter; in a fraction of a second the moment is captured. I photograph what I find interesting & stimulates my curiosity. Those subjects and scenes usually go unnoticed. I truly believe that a photograph tells a story, visually expresses a narrative without words and reignites feelings and emotions we all share in this journey we call life. GV 2017
Gregory Varano was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He studied Photojournalism as an introductory course in 1983 at the Etobicoke School of The Arts in Toronto, Ontario. Varano continued his photographic studies majoring in the “Creative Photography Program” at Humber College of Applied Arts and Journalism at George Brown College in Toronto. Varano has been working as a professional commercial photographer since 1987. In the late 90’s he shifted towards Editorial/Photojournalism. He works predominantly in black and white studies that reflect a cinematic ‘Film Noir” style reminiscent of the 1940’s and 1950’s era of photography. Varano still prefers film photography but does use digital on occasion. He personally hand processes his film demanding total control of the image from camera to the final print. Varano prints all of his work in both a traditional wet darkroom and modern digital giclee printing using only museum grade inks and cotton rag papers. All of his giclee prints are printed to museum grade ISO 9706 standard, to ensure the highest archival permanence and the best return in investment. Email Gregory
